About Harm Reduction
Harm minimisation has been the Australian Government’s policy in relation to Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) issues for over 20 years, with this framework guiding Government policy and work practices.
Harm minimisation is a comprehensive approach to drug-related harm, involving a balance between demand reduction, supply reduction and harm reduction strategies.
The International Harm Reduction Association recommends that the term harm reduction should be understood to mean, “policies and programs which attempt primarily to reduce the adverse health, social and economic consequences of mood altering substances to individual drug users, their families and their communities”.
