The Return on Investment 2 Report recognises that there are economic and health benefits to be gained from expanding Needle and Syringe Programs (NSPs) across Australia.
According to the report significant public health benefits can be attained with further expansion of sterile injecting equipment distribution. Increased funding and provision of NSPs would be associated with greater cost-savings. Expansion of NSPs in all jurisdictions would be cost-saving. There is potential for expansion, considering that only approximately 50 per cent of all injections are currently made with a sterile syringe.
Anex is working actively to increase NSP outlets in Australia – including supporting the introduction of 24 hour syringe dispensers.
